About
As a Libertarian I’m very concerned with the direction our country is going. I’m no philosopher, economist or politician, I don’t pretend to be, I’m just a regular guy. My Libertarian viewpoint for the most part has been from the gut. A feeling that individual freedom is the only reliable source of human dignity, prosperity, opportunity and equality.
I realize though, after the past year, that a gut feeling isn’t enough if you truly want to make a difference. You have to be able to join in the battle of ideas. I’ve come to realize that defending your freedom is less a military pursuit and more of an intellectual pursuit. Knowing the truth in your heart is no defense against the spin that we are subject to on a daily basis from both the left and the right. With this in mind, I’ve made the commitment to myself to study this philosophy in depth. The battle of ideas is the most important battle in the never ending war for individual freedom. Hopefully I can convince somebody else to follow along with me or even better, begin a journey of their own.
I feel that to be a responsible American you should stand by your principles and not be afraid to voice your opinion. But, and I think most importantly, you shouldn’t be married to an ideology. Liberals, Conservatives and Libertarians should be willing to listen objectively to the other side’s arguments and change their stance if somebody has a better idea. If you aren’t willing to do that then, please don’t vote, you are too blinded by ideology to make an informed decision. Nobody has the market cornered on wisdom.
I used to consider myself a conservative but over the past few years, in researching different viewpoints, I’ve slowly but consistently moved toward the Libertarian standpoint. I can no longer, at this stage in my life, honestly call myself a Conservative although I still maintain some of my conservative views.
In researching the Libertarian viewpoint I’ve relied heavily on a few resources that I hope anybody that reads this will take the time to make an objective study of. I’ve posted a few RSS feeds on the home page of my blog to some of the more informative resources and have also posted a few links to some of my favorite informational sites on the internet.
At some point I’ll take the time to add some of my favorite books on Libertarianism but, for now I’ll just link to the bookstore at the Cato Institute. Cato has been the driving force behind my conversion to Libertarianism and is in my opinion the absolute best resource on the internet.
